Seeds of Ideas

  • What if all the Mario Kart race courses were connected together into one giant master course? Also, Mario Kart IRL: augmented reality + go-kart racing

  • Chain ring inscribed with “one chain ring to rule them all” (in LOTR Elven script) for a single speed bicycle

  • Billion Star Hotel: Hotel in a Bortle zone 0, 1, or 2 area (no light pollution). Hotel does not have lights (electrical outlets are available for charging phones and such) Roof decks for stargazing, gently heated floor so you can lay down comfortably to stargaze (ask me for logo and architectural plans)

  • Sidenotes: Document publisher with two columns (one narrow, one wide). Wide is for main body text as you would on a regular doc, narrow is for headers, sections, “footnotes.” In a world of infinite scrolling, footnotes aren’t so practical anymore so now we have Sidenotes.

  • I’ve observed that MBTA buses have a big reflective stripes running along the sides. What if the sides of buses and tractor trailers have a “hidden” design that shows up when car headlights shine on it. Cool advertising! Secret messages!

  • Murals/guerrilla art on large dumpsters, trash cans, etc. with infographics on how to properly recycle

  • Stock market themed bar on Wall St, NYC: Beer prices go up/down depending on demand. Sell “stocks” of beer, wall ticker menu

  • Bougie Bougie: Fancy candle company (“bougie” means “candle” in French)

  • Stock photography and illustration OneThousandWords.com, 1000words.com “A picture is worth a thousand words” (This domain name was available last time I checked)

  • Alobar cocktail or wine bar named after Alobar from Jitterbug Perfume. Cocktails and menu names inspired by the book: K23, jasmine, citrus, beets, Pan, nymphs Lalo

  • Host a Show & Tell, for all ages to participate, not limited to only young’uns. Themes: Historical family items, your favorite kitchen tool, book, a toy from your childhood, something you found on a walk, a letter someone wrote to you, a cool map or chart. “I don’t want to show things, but to give people the desire to see.” —Agnes Varda

  • A blanket lined with googly eyes (ask me for a mockup)

  • Live cooking show that incorporates magic tricks (could also be a Youtube channel)

  • Large scale origami events: sail a life-side origami boat on the river, roll a 12 foot tall origami “ball” across the field

  • USPS mail delivery bicycle (or tricycle!) with postage stamp head badge

  • Postcard from the moon

  • Opera Themed Night Club: the venue would be a historical, architecturally ornate opera house. Music: remixed opera dance, techno (“Diva Dance” from The Fifth Element, Diablo Swing Orchestra). Cocktails named after operas (Figaro, Phantom, The Magic Flute, Elektra)

  • Hammock Hostel - instead of beds, the rooms are set up for hanging hammocks - bring your own hammock or borrow one. App for sharing good spots to hang up hammocks outdoors (i.e. trees that are an ideal distance apart)

  • Augmented Reality app to add greenery to spaces. Take a photo of the space or structure, add greenery (green roofs, fruit orchards, gardens, urban farms) This could be useful for civic discourse/urban improvement projects

  • Moooooovers Mooooving Company: cow mascot spotted cow pattern printed on moving truck and boxes milkman inspired uniforms ice cream party after they finish moving (ask me for logo and visuals)

  • When designing a device, such as a home printer, put power cord outlets on multiple sides so user can use the side that works best for the cabinet or location they’re placing the device

  • Tiny URL, Tiny Website: tiny URL links to a tiny 8-bit version of a website

  • Clock with hands that turn counterclockwise “Humans are allergic to change. They love to say, ‘We’ve always done it this way.’ I try to fight that. That’s why I have a clock on my wall that runs counterclockwise.” —Grace Hopper

  • Gold ink ribbon for typewriters (rainbow ones exist but I haven’t found metallic ones)

  • Watermelon tuner: App that helps you pick a juicy watermelon based on the sound it makes when you tap on it. (Does any one else’s parents do this?) Follow-up: are you happy with the watermelon you picked? How does it taste? Texture? Watermelon catalog to learn about different varieties. Sponsored by watermelon farmers (ask me for logo and product plans)

  • #unplug the only admission fee: your cell phone for the duration of your visit

  • Silicon Valley edition of the SIMS (but I have a feeling it won’t be that much different than real world hah)

  • Giant toothbrush sculpture with grass bristles

  • CMYK-ub: Rummikub with numbers in CMYK colors, on wood tiles

  • “Plant Friends” seed packets sold in pairs/or more that are biodynamic and mutually beneficial for each other (see: Companion planting)

  • Hot water pipes in bathroom - detour the pipes as towel racks to heat up bath towels while showering (ask me for the design plans)

  • Documentary of bartender shakes styles—each one is unique

  • Restaurant on the Minuteman bike path, only accessible by bicycle or walking

  • Microplane teaspoon and tablespoon Tablespoon with grater on the bottom. As the food is grated, it fills up the spoon and you can see (measurement markings?) when you have the amount you need.

  • Popcycle bike food cart + popsicles = Popcycle!

  • Piecycle bike food cart + pies = Piecycle! (Ask me about my dinnner + dessert handpies)

  • Bread Box: the box bottom is made of wood which doubles as a cutting board for slicing bread. Cover hinges near the bottom, no sides when open. Include space for bread knife storage?

  • Old gas station turned into a bike cafe/bar + shop. Al fresco dining; less concrete, more grass; big gas price signage will say "FREE" (bicycling) or "$9999/gallon for gas"

  • Wet Bicycle Stand for Indoors 1' x 6' tray with grass/flora metal rack for tires to sit slightly above, allowing water to drip down and water the grass

  • “Yeti Confetti” aka snowflakes (I don’t know, I just like how it sounds… you figure out what to make)

  • Mobius strip holiday garland/wreath... Mobius shaped roller coaster ride…

  • Lunch Meat/Meet: a lunchtime gathering to meet coworkers and dine together; sliced deli meat is the motif
